What type of notifications can I send to community members with Bettermode Platform?

That's one of the most frequently asked questions from both clients and potential clients. According to the Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report, 46% of survey participants marked increasing retention rate as a top priority.

At Bettermode, we understand the importance of boosting member retention—that's why our community platform offers a host of notification tools to bring back members and keep them updated.

Here's an overview of the notification mechanisms available on Bettermode.

Email Notifications

Emails are one of the most reliable and widely-adopted social technologies for communication. The majority of social media sites and online communities use email to notify users about important account information and key activities.

In-community notification

With Bettermode, you can select from email notification settings:

Full notifications: Emails for key activities related to the member, digests, and important emails.

Essential only: Emails only for important actions such as resetting passwords, account verification, etc.

The first option sends emails when someone requests their answer, mentions them, answers their question, posts comments on their answer, and more. It also sends daily digest emails covering important content based on member interest (topics followed, questions participated in, etc.). All critical account emails are sent as well.

In-Community Notifications

Bettermode allows you to send notifications to members inside the community for categories such as answers, questions, comments, and mentions.

Members access these from the bell icon in the top-right corner. They can click on individual notifications and take necessary actions. This keeps engagement happening within the community itself.

Third-Party Integrations

Popular third-party tools ranging from messaging apps to marketing automation solutions integrate with Bettermode. Communities can leverage these to customize notifications sent to members.

Messaging Apps

Bettermode offers integration with popular apps like Telegram and Facebook Messenger to notify users about different activities inside the community concerning their account. Members don't just receive notifications—they can react to them by taking action right inside the app.

Marketing Automation Apps

Bettermode has built-in integration with marketing apps like Intercom. Once configured, Bettermode syncs member data in Intercom. All activities associated with the member are sent to Intercom as well—you can use this to automate messaging based on different conditions.

For example, if someone hasn't uploaded a profile picture 5 days after joining the community, you can send an email or in-app message via Intercom.

Webhooks

Webhooks are another powerful way to notify external web services and send data about any event happening in the community. You can precisely select different community events such as "joined group," "asked question," "posted answer," and send the data and metadata (including member data) to the URL you specify.

The POST request sent from Bettermode to your specified URL can automate notifications by custom integration with channels that Bettermode doesn't support out-of-the-box. A popular method is using webhooks to integrate with Zapier and perform different actions based on triggers.

Notification Hub

Bettermode also offers a notification hub for advanced platform users. The notification center acts as a central repository of all activities happening inside the community and broadcasts them.

Community owners looking to capture all of these can build a custom app to listen to broadcasted messages and take further action. This requires assistance from the Bettermode engineering team and is available for enterprise clients only.

Bringing Third-Party Notifications Into the Community

All the notification systems mentioned above focus on broadcasting messages from the community. However, you might want to notify community members by integrating messages or updates from another site.

You can do this using the Bettermode API and automatically push notifications into the community. This creates a two-way flow of information between your community and other systems.

Choosing the Right Mix

The right notification strategy depends on your community's goals and your members' preferences.

For high engagement: Use a combination of in-community notifications, email digests, and messaging app integrations to reach members wherever they are.

For targeted campaigns: Integrate with marketing automation tools to trigger notifications based on specific behaviors or milestones.

For custom workflows: Use webhooks to connect community events to any external system and build sophisticated automation.

The goal is bringing members back to the community without overwhelming them. Find the balance between keeping members informed and respecting their attention.

FAQs

Can members control their notification preferences?

Yes. Members can adjust their notification settings to control what they receive and how often. This includes email frequency, in-app notifications, and digest preferences.

What integrations are available for notifications?

Bettermode integrates with messaging apps (Telegram, Facebook Messenger), marketing automation tools (Intercom, HubSpot), and supports webhooks for custom integrations with any service that accepts HTTP requests.

How do we prevent notification fatigue?

Use digest emails instead of individual notifications for routine activities. Let members control their preferences. Reserve immediate notifications for high-priority items like direct mentions or responses to their content.

Can we send custom notifications to specific member segments?

Yes, through marketing automation integrations. By syncing member data and activity to tools like Intercom or HubSpot, you can trigger targeted notifications based on member attributes, behaviors, or segments.
